What is the role of opposition parties in Canada?

Two ideas are bundled into the same role. Discover Canada's phrase has both: opposing the government's proposals when the opposition disagrees, and trying to improve them when there is room. So opposition is constructive — meant to refine legislation as well as challenge it.

The keyword peacefully matters. Discover Canada places opposition activity inside the parliamentary system — opposition is debate and votes in the House of Commons, not violent obstruction.
