What was the 'Head Tax'?

Discover Canada defines the Head Tax in one direct sentence inside its account of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The guide writes: Afterwards the Chinese were subject to discrimination, including the Head Tax, a race-based entry fee. The Government of Canada apologized in 2006 for this discriminatory policy. So the Head Tax in Discover Canada's description is exactly what the test answer says — a race-based entry fee for Chinese immigrants entering Canada.

The setting is the post-CPR period.
